Best Car Brake Kits – QP Ratings (Jan 2019)

Last updated: 27.01.2019 3

Bigger brakes mean better braking. That’s why we review best car brake kits to help your pads work more effectively when you need them most. Braking mechanisms tend to wear down over time, especially if your car regularly goes through heavy acceleration and braking. By installing big brake kits, you can essentially give your brake pads a greater surface area to work with, so there is more of a chance of reducing your braking distance on the road. Get your brakes tested regularly and give them a better chance of working more efficiently with a big brake kit from our range.

Key Specifications

  • BMW M5 1981 - 1988 E28 Chassis
  • Rotor diameter: 330 mm/13 inch
  • Lightweight aluminum calipers in Ksport Orange finish
  • 2-piece slotted rotors
  • Carbon steel caliper brackets

Ksport big brake kits provide the ultimate in stopping power for your vehicle. Integrating new brake technology into the design of the kits allows for a kit that highly reduces brake fade and continually cools and refreshes the brake pads surface under braking. These brake systems are designed for easy installation with minimal tools required (in most applications). Our extreme lightweight caliper comes in differential bore configuration. It is machined from aircraft quality billet, weighs just over 5 pounds each, and has machined in protection grooves for the bridge tubes. Aluminum pistons, high temperature seals, and stainless steel brake pad wear plates are also standard on each caliper design. The opposed piston caliper design greatly improves pad wear and caliper rigidity over the OEM design. The stainless steel brake lines stop expansion under pressure. Most applications utilize the 2-piece floating disc assembly, which reduces weight both rotating and unsprung. The floating disc also stops thermal stresses of extreme heat from warping the disc or cupping the braking surface. The unique slot design on the rotor greatly reduces braking noise and expels gas and pad debris faster than conventional slot designs. Every rotor is always heat treated and balanced before shipment for the best possible performance. Cross drilled rotors tend to run cooler than slotted and are recommended for daily driven vehicles. Slotted rotors are recommended for vehicles that will be seeing more track use than daily driving.

For vehicles not offering a Gran Turismo System for the rear axle, Brembo Sport brake rotors (slotted or drilled) are available to replace the stock rotors on the rear axle and provide a matched appearance on all four corners of the vehicle. Gran Turismo Brake Systems packages combine high performance fixed aluminum brake calipers, large diameter 1- or 2-piece vented brake rotors, brake pads, stainless steel braided brake lines and aircraft quality mounting brackets and hardware. (See photo and chart below.) Brake caliper and rotor sizes are selected based on the vehicle's requirements. In most cases, the aluminum calipers are available in red, silver or black finishes. Additionally, the rotors feature drilled or slotted disc surfaces depending on the vehicle application and brake system selected. All cross-drilled hol

Your tyres do play a huge role in stopping your car. While changes to different parts of the brake system may affect certain characteristics or traits of the braking behavior, using more capable and ‘stickier’ tyres, to most, is ultimately the only sure-fire method of decreasing stopping distances.

But using less-than-capable braking kits can cause even more of a mess. While most may think that acceleration is everything when it comes to racing or driving for that matter, your car’s brakes play just as an important role as any other components in the car.

Bigger isn’t necessarily better when it comes to all things automotive. But when it comes to brakes, size generally does matter. That’s because braking performance depends largely on how much surface area the brake pads have to bite into. As a result, larger pads and larger brake discs make for shorter stopping distances. Plus, the increased surface area allows for greater heat dissipation.

That’s why installing a set of proper and reliable big brake kit is recommended for drivers who enjoy circuit racing, drifting, motorsports or even for those who just want to have an ease of mind when driving.

A brake kit refers to the entire set of brake kit which consists of a brake disc (also known as rotor to some), brake pads, the brake caliper, brake lines and mounting hardware. An example of a big brake kit from FORCE with six pistons

There are several advantages to big brake kits from different brands that range from shorter stopping distances, better brake modulation, a firmer brake pedal and less brake fade in your system. More notably, your big brake kit is going to offer a better spread of heat over the cylinder to prevent damaging effects, that other standard factory installed systems suffer from.

For starters, unlike some stock brakes, where they can either be too mushy or over-sensitive, a brake kit can deliver a good initial bite to the brakes, making sudden braking more comfortable. Providing a good brake modulation and consistent pedal feel are also part of the effects from a brake kit. This helps to instil confidence in the driver, regardless on track or road, when he is travelling at high speeds.

One thing you would notice with these brake kits is a greater decrease in the stopping distance, as there is a greater area of contact, allowing for better brake control. Where stock brakes have a jerking feel when the brakes are slammed due to the intervention by the Anti-lock braking system (ABS), a brake kit will bring your car to a total halt in a fuss-free and confident manner. Plus, due to the pad design, there is more area that comes in contact with the brake disc, giving the vehicle greater stopping power and heat displacement.

Having a larger brake disc helps increase thermal effectiveness, absorbing the heat generated under heavy braking. As most of us would already know, car brakes take the kinetic energy of your car’s movement and disperse it as heat when the calipers clamp down on the brake discs. Beyond a certain temperature, your stock brakes will lose effectiveness and may even cause you to slam on the brake pedal to get the car to slow down or stop. More notably, this greatly reduces brake fade and provides consistently shorter stopping distances.

More impressively, all these can be achieved while giving your car that supercar look and feel without compromising on your car’s performance.

Before investing in a big brake upgrade kit or individual big brake parts, there’s one thing you should check. You must be certain that your current wheel size is compatible with the kit. Stock or factory wheels often don’t provide the clearance necessary for big brake kits.

Installing one that of incorrect size can cause unnecessary friction between the calipers and your car’s backside of the rim, reducing your car’s ability to maximise traction, robbing you of performance as well as the deserved confidence-inspiring braking responsiveness.

Additionally, a system that uses too many pistons or pistons that are too large will make the brake pedal much more difficult to modulate, limiting you of brake input.

Another factor to look out for is the cost as well as the installation process itself. Big brands such as Brembo, Power Slot Plus, StopTech and Rotora are indeed reliable but are they worth that much to install in your car? Plus, some of these brands do not offer any forms of guarantee and may not have professionals installing the brake kits on your car.
